Modernization of Terminal 1 at Marseille Provence Airport: a new beginning

After three years of work and a two-year closure due to the pandemic, Terminal 1 at Marseille Provence Airport reopened this Wednesday, June 19, welcoming passengers from fifty airlines. This project, involving over 60 employees, is part of the “Cœur d’aéroport” program, aimed at modernizing and unifying the airport’s infrastructure.

Architectural improvements and innovations

The work involved modifying the existing tunnel and creating a new building linking satellites 1, 2 and 3. Improvements include the installation of nine aircraft kiosks, 130 self-service kiosks, 90 automatic baggage drop-offs, digital signage and a new queuing layout. The terminal can now accommodate an additional 1.2 million passengers. With 28,000 m² of refurbished space and 22,000 m² of new space, the terminal uses natural light, LEDs and ventilation to reduce energy consumption. The project doubles the proportions of the original building designed by Fernand Pouillon.

Customer experience

The new Terminal 1 offers a single check-in area, a single security checkpoint and a single shopping area, simplifying the passenger experience. To offer a fast, contactless experience, an automated baggage sorting system and a biometric pathway using facial recognition will be implemented. Personalized alerts and an interactive itinerary system will guide passengers, while some 20 self-service kiosks will enable autonomous check-in. Inspired by the landscapes of Provence, the terminal features a check-in area reminiscent of the Cours Mirabeau and a boarding area evocative of Marseille’s Vieux Port.

Congratulations to setec opency and also to all the other stakeholders involved in this major project, namely: Foster + Partners, ROUGERIE+TANGRAM, WSP et Travaux du midi.
